FACTS

Klagenfurt is the capital of the Austrian province Carinthia and the county’s 6th biggest city. The city is located in the south of Austria and the east bank of lake "Wörthersee".

The Old Town is a very nice combination of old buildings and new architecture, already three times it was awarded the "Europa Nostra"-Diploma. Enjoy the many public arcade courts and the old passages that are home to many boutiques, cafés and locals for a break .Klagenfurt has Austria’s oldest pedestrian zone. Already in 1961, the local government decided to limit access of Kramergasse and Wienergasse to pedestrians. This has always attracted many people and it is a perfect place to watch them. The most southern province capital of Austria is the economic, cultural and historic centre of Carinthia. International enterprises export from the city of the lindworm (city symbol) to the world. During the last years, Klagenfurt has developed to a competence centre of information technology.

FIGURES

The name Klagenfurt comes from the river Glanfurt, which crosses the city southwards. Irony of destiny: Today, in colloquial speech the river is called Sattnitz. But still there are no plans in renaming the city.

SIGHTSEEING

Lindworm
The lindworm on Neuer Platz (New Place)is Klangenfurt´s city symbol and heraldic animal. The monument of the mythic animal was constructed in 1583 out of a unique chlorite-schist block from Kreuzbergl, the city mountain. For a long time, the sculptor Ulrich Vogelsang was supposed to be the creator, but this is still not sure. The fountain, gate and statue of the heroic Hercules were attached later on.

Alter Platz (Old Place)
Go and see the Alter Platz in the city heart with the pest-statue from 1680 and the many old residential buildings. The house of the "Goldenen Gans" (golden goose) on the square´s westside is the oldest, documented building of the city (1489).

Landhaus
The Landhaus is one of the most representative profane buildings of the city. The pompous emblem room from the 16th century is home to the 665 emblems of Carinthian land estates and a wall and ceiling painting by Josef Ferdinand Fromiller. The Renaissance facades of the inner court are still beautifully conserved.
