FACTS

No other city has been written about that many times, no other city has fewer ground beneath its feet. Still, Venice excites romantic people and culture vultures alike - because the city is unbelievably charming and has such a unique atmosphere.

In an awestruck fashion, its inhabitants used to call Venice "La Serenissima" - the most illustrious. In 1932, when the great car and railways bridge between the mainland and the lagoon city was built, Venice entered a new age: it became more easily accessible, and the people did come. Today, about ten million tourists per year visit the fascinating city with its 150 canals, 400 bridges and a maze of 3,000 alleyways. It is not easy to find your way in Venice - a perfect analogy to love: only what is difficult to conquer is actually interesting.

Venice's true charm, however, lies in its inhabitants: at the fish market, vendors sing opera arias while filleting their goods, a craftswoman artfully decorates a pompous Venetian mask, a vegetable vendor skillfully navigates his full-packed gondola through the canals.

The whole city becomes colorful and spectacular when the citizens celebrate their Carnival. For centuries, they have dressed up in colorful costumes with the typical Venetian masks. The mask has a long tradition: for ten days a year, everyone can put it on and succumb to the illusion of being someone else.

FIGURES

Venice's streets and houses are carried by more than 200 million oak tree, larch and elm tree piles. Due to the city's massive weight, the lagoon's sandy ground has sunk more than 23 centimeters since 1900.

GET AROUND

Airport
From Marco Polo Airport, it's best to take the bus, the vaporetto (public boat) or a water taxi (www.veneziataxi.it) into the lagoon city.

Public transportation
There are no cars or trains in the historic city center of Venice. Most sights are easily accessible on foot, though. Far distances can be covered with a vaporetto. Lines 1 and 82 go from Piazzale Roma via the station (Ferrovia), Rialto and Accademia to St. Mark's Square. The water buses go 24/7, tickets can be purchased at the counter in front of the stops. A single ticket is quite expensive: it costs € 6.00. You might want to buy a 24-hour ticket ("biglietto ventiquattro ore") for € 12.00 right away. It gives you access to Venice for a whole day.

SIGHTSEEING

Piazza San Marco
The 175-m long St. Mark's Square is Venice's center. It is unique at every time of the day (the many pigeons alone do the trick). Napoleon used to rave about the square - he called it "the world's most beautiful salon". The piazza is surrounded by important buildings: St. Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace and the prominent Campanile. There is a breathtaking view over the city from the roof of the Campanile.
Stop: San Marco

Basilica di San Marco
The overwhelming gorgeousness of the more than 1000-year-old basilica with five domes and tracery-decorated archs and windows is the result of numerous extensions and remodeling projects. The heart of the complex is a building that was constructed in the 9th century on the floor plan of a Greek cross. The building used to house bones of St. Mark. Over 500 ancient columns adorn the front and the interior of the basilica. It is also called "Golden Basilica" due to the terrific works of mosaic art on golden ground. These mosaics depict the events in the Old and New Testaments on 4,240 m². The "Museo Marciano" in the gallery above the atrium exhibits the four famous ancient bronze horses, the "Quadriga".
Stop: San Marco, opening hours 9.45 a.m. - 5.30 p.m., till 4.30 in the winter, www.basilicasanmarco.it

Ponte di Rialto
The most-visited bridge spans over the Grand Canal in a 48-m-high arch. It is built on 12,000 oak tree trunks. The trading town's commercial center used to be located right here for many centuries. Today, it is a popular venue for those who are in love.
Stop: Rialto

Gallerie dell'Accademia
The museum exhibits artworks from the 14th to the 18th centuries. Over 800 masterpieces by Belline, Carpaccio, Giorgione, Tintoretto, Titian, Canaletto, Piazzetta and Tiepolo are shown tightly next to each other. The painting gallery is one of the most important in the world. You should book tickets in advance (tel. 520 03 45) - though the ticket will be a bit more expensive (1 Euro) it will save you the queue in front of the entrance.
Dorsoduro 1050, stop: Accademia, opening hours Monday 8.15 a.m. - 2 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday 8.15 a.m. - 7.15 p.m. www.gallerieaccademia.org

SHOPPING

Venice is an expensive place, especially concerning fashion and accessories by famous designers. Their flashy boutiques can be found all over the city center.

In the elegant Calle Vallaresso at the boat stop San Marco, both fabulous boutiques and traditional shops can be found in immediate vicinity to each other. The abundantly decorated shop windows look just great. Gucci with its fine leather purses here, Dolce & Gabbana with its eccentric creations and Missoni with its creative and colorful sweaters there, Bottega Veneta with elegant leather goods and the Camiceria San Marco with a huge selection of cotton and silk fabrics for tailor-made shirts and blouses  to the left. Opposite to the right, there is the exclusve Venice Design Art Gallery, on the next corner you will find Bruno Magli's magnificent shoes, and diagonally opposite the noble jeweler Codognato. Further famous brand names like Fratelli Rossetti, Fendi and Valentino can be found on the houses of the westbound Salizzada San Moisè, just like Damiani's diamond jewelry that is being promoted by Isabella Rossellini. Hip bargains can be found along the less luxurious shopping streets like Lista di Spagna and Strada Nova.
