FACTS

"We can do anything, except of speaking proper German" - marketing strategists from Stuttgart advertize their "picture-perfect region" Baden-Württemberg with this slogan on posters and TV. True!

The Swabians, that's how this successful crowd of southwestern Germany is called, can manufacture expensive cars (Merzedes, Porsche), turn an industrial city such as Stuttgart into the greenest metropolis in the country, make Spätzle and Maultauschen and of course "schaffe, schaffe, Häusle baue." Very early the inhabitants of Stuttgart made a virtue out of necessity: Being barred from industrialization of Germany in the 19th century due to lack of traffic roads and primary products the "poor" fellows started to work meticulously and experiment in their workshops. Today the city is deemed to the capital of middle class dispite of the big car factories. The big family owned business produce one export-hit  after the other. That much of perfection brings jealousy and therefore the so called hardworking, cheap, persnickety and narrow-minded Swabian now and then becomes a target of mockery. One reason might also be their songful-sweet dialect, because there is one thing they really can't do - speak proper German.

SHOPPING

Stuttgart's purchasing power is about 25 percent above state average. And in the wide pedestrian area the Swabians do anything to get rid of their reputation to sit on their money.

Best thing to do is starting your stroll in the 1000 m long pedestrian area on Königststraße and Schulstraße. If you are looking for exclusive shops you need to proceed to Calwer Straße with its desighner boutiques, jewelers and leather stores. The Bohnenviertel offers galleries, antiques and junk stores - it is still a secret tip for art lovers and bargain hunters. Culinaries are found at the in 1914 established Große Markthalle, where you can buy lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and spices. Organic farming is more popular in Baden-Württemberg than anywhere else and the well-funded people of Stuttgart love everything that looks and tastes like nature.

SOUVENIRS

Stuttgart is ruled by King Soccer: The city was venue of World Cup 2006, and the year after VfB Stuttgart became German Champion.

The Swabians also get the souvenir business  better than other: "Stuttgart is way more beautiful than Berlin" says selfconcious (or more self ironic) T-Shirts - after all in the 60ies almost the entire youth of Stuttgart escaped the local narrowness to move to cool West-Berlin.

Spätzle can be purchased dried almost everywhere. In addition you need a good bottle of regional wine or also a Tannenzäpfle Beer from the black forest.
