FACTS

Bucharest is similiar to a huge quilt which was undone and then again put together with ethnic minorities, ambitious dictators and aestetic monarchists and held by old myths and legends.

„Where are you, Ţepeş, Master?” – many Romanians still ask for their most famous inhabitant, Vlad Draculea Ţepeş, also known as Count Dracula; a declared opponent of disorder, idleness and chaotic grievances. Not that the Romanians need an sovereign like that nowadays – it’s just that the tourists love the dark fellow so much.  On the other side there is a stunningly manifold architecture and culture, a colourful potpourri of gorgeous French boulevards, Viennese "şniţel" (Schnitzel)as well as the major contrabass of Romany music. The city was first mentioned 1459 with Vlad Draculeas’ signature. Nowadays everyone quarrels for the best place in the sun: thick tree roots fight their way through the concrete as well as the population who in the midst of permanent upheavals succeeded in maintaining their traditions and black humor.

SIGHTSEEING

Palace of Parliament (Palatul Parlamentului)
The second biggest building in the world is determined by kitsch, splendour and pretentious lust for power. Even the Pentagon has to "admit defeat" in regard of the palace's 450.000 m². The building of the 3000 rooms, 60 corridors and 64 reception halls resulted in staggering costs. At the same time Romania's people were starving and freezing. Nowadays you can find various state institutions and a museum of contemporary art under the roof of the "people's house".
Calea 13 Septembrie 1, Tel.: 311 36 14, daily tours 10 a.m - 4 p.m. (Start: international conference room)

Revolution Square (Piaţa Revoluţiei)
The bullet holes in the surrounding functional buildings still testify to the past bloody scenes on the Revolution Square. A monument was built in the honour of the heroes who 1989 lost their lives for an independent Bucharest. From the King's Palace's balcony Ceauşescu made his last speech before he had to flee from the furious crowd.

Controceni Palace
Here the "small Paris" can again be recognised. The French architect Paul Gottereau realised the neo-baroque dream of bombastic stairways and galleries in the style of Paris' opera house. The building was actually designed as the residence of Prince Ferdinand but it was then misused by Ceausescu as a simple inn. Nowadays the palace serves as the residence of the Romanian president and it also houses the National Museum.
Geniului Boulevard 1

King's Palace (Palatul Regal)
This neo-classicist building already experienced monarchy, dictatorship and art. Ceausescus and his family escaped from the roof of the communist government building some days before their execution. Today the palace is animated with the souls of old masters: works of Romanian, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Russian painters are exhibited in Romania's most noted museum of art.

INSIDER TIP

Beggars
You should better ignore beggars in Bucharest who often act aggressively. If you start talking to them it will be difficult to get rid of those fequently obtrusive poeple. Old people who helplessly beg with their hats without causing you any inconvenience, however, really deserve support. Their pension is often not enough to survive. They are often too old to work and thus die from hunger. They are even happy about the smallest donation.

Taking photographs/filming
You should especially take care when taking pictures of bridges, aerodromes and military institutions because in front of which often prohibition signs can be found. Roma people, however, do not "wear" signs but you still should not take pictures of them because some of them believe that a photograph would steal their souls.

Banks and credit cards
Banks are opended on weekdays from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m., you can also cash traveller cheques here. The exchange of money is, however, frequently cheaper in bigger hotels or private exchange offices. Do not exchange money in the streets, this almost always has to do with fraud.
