FACTS

Oslo is surrounded by nature and wildness: In summer you can go sailing in the fjords or hiking in the mountains, in winter skiing. Hardly elsewhere people are so keen on outdoor activities than here.

Oslo is one if the smallest European capitals with about 500000 inhabitants. And still the whole country talks about the migration to the city. Many young Norwegians leave their small, quiet villages to settle in the capital. From the bird’s eye view the country is about 2000km long, following the cliffy coastline, it would be about 21000km. Especially towards the north it can be very lonesome as Norway has the second fewest population density of Europe, after Iceland. Young farmers do not find wives anymore, although the Norwegian government highly subventions agriculture and fishery with incomes from the oil production. The reasons for fleeing towards the city are the similar than elsewhere.Norwegians are a small people on their own and want to keep this status: In 1972 and 1994 they twice voted against an EU-accession. But yet, Oslo does not at all seam provincial or isolated: You find a lively art scene, almost one of five inhabitants was born outside Norway. The joyous way people enjoy life on warm, almost 19-hour long summer days is incredible.
